Summary of scientific research
My research has covered foreign policy, political culture and political economy in Northeast and Southeast Asia. In addition to my experience as an academic, my seven years in public service exposed me firsthand to the workings of diplomacy and policy-making and to the diversity of perspectives employed in the practice of governance and international relations. I was a delegate to the 1986 Constitutional Commission that framed the present Constitution of the Philippines, and served as the Deputy Secretary-General of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and as the Philippine Ambassador and Permanent Representative to ASEAN. These opportunities enriched my knowledge and deepened my appreciation of political developments in my country and the Asia-Pacific region.
