Summary of scientific research
My scientific research centres on questions concerning social standards in international law, differences between legal cultures, human rights law, and legal developments in Central and Eastern Europe, especially in Russia as well as public international law in general. As I had studied both law and Slavic languages and literature I was always interested in understanding differences not only between different legal regulations, but also between different legal cultures. In my doctoral thesis I have analysed the transplantation of the idea of constitutional control into the legal system of the late Soviet Union. During the transformation period I closely followed up to legal developments in Central and Eastern Europe. I was especially interested in the changes of the attitude towards "Western" values such as rule of law ("Rechtsstaat"), pluralism and democracy especially in Russia and the other successor States to the Soviet Union. The main focus of my publications was constitutional and social law. One important subject in this context was the influence of international standards on the reforms in national law. My major scientific study ("Habilitation") was devoted to social standards in international law and their interaction with social developments on the ground.
