His contributions focused on macroeconomics, monetary theory and international economics. During his years as Governor of the Bank of Italy and President of the European Central Bank, his publications and speeches were devoted to the economies of Italy and the euro area, and also centred on the institutional design of the euro, on monetary policy in the euro area, and on the future of Europe.
